Tay Valley

Tay Valley MapFormally Bathurst Burgess Sherbrooke, Tay Valley Township makes up the southwest corner of the Lanark County and covers 528km2. It is bordered to the east by the Town of Perth, and to the South by Big Rideau Lake.

In 1998 the townships of South Sherbrooke, Bathurst and North Burgess amalgamated to form the new Township of Bathurst Burgess Sherbrooke (BBS).The name of the new township was later renamed to Tay Valley in June 2002.

According to the 2001 census, the municipality is home to 5,440 residents, which was a 5% increase over 1996. The largest settlements in the Township are the hamlets of Stanleyville, Bolingbroke, Maberly, Glen Tay, Brooke, Dewitt's Corners and Fallbrook.

This historic community was settled in the early 1800's, when several hundred Scottish, and later Irish, soldiers and settlers established the "Scotch Line". Their descendants stayed to build prosperous farms, beautiful Georgian stone homes, and an industrious and competent work force.

The Township, with its numerous lakes, woodlands and marshes, offers countless outdoor activities that embrace all seasons. Lakes include Rideau, Bennett,Christie, Long, Black, Pike, Otty, Adams, McLaren, Mud, Loon and Round. Rivers include the Tay, Mississippi and Fall. These abundant water resources make the area perfect for canoeing, sailing, water-skiing, swimming or pursuing other activities such as fishing, bird watching, nature hikes, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and skating.

Nature enthusiasts will find an abundance of natural beauty at Silver Lake and Murphy's Point Provincial Parks. An interesting diversion is a visit to the ruins of the 19th century Silver Queen Mine, which produced mica, feldspar and apatite.

Visitors can take a driving tour down our winding countryside lanes during autumn to see Mother Nature in all her splendor. The area offers a fine selection of summer camps, tent and trailer sites, cottage rentals and bed & breakfast accommodations.

Industries include the world's largest calcite producer, the Swiss-based OMYA, with their largest Canadian processing centre. Already one of Eastern Ontario's largest industrial complexes, Steeprock has recently announced a major plant expansion.
