Municipality of Mississippi Mills

The former Town of Almonte joined with the townships of Pakenham and Ramsay to form the new Municipality of Mississippi Mills. This new town makes up the northeast boundary of the County, and borders the Town of Carleton Place and the city limits of the newly amalgamated City of Ottawa.
The former Town of Almonte was named after General Juan Almonte, a Mexican soldier and diplomat. Lauded as a 'kindly and accomplished gentlemen' he was venerated by a group of British residents in the late 1800's. Almonte also has the distinction of being the birthplace of James Naismith, the inventor of the game of basketball.

Mississippi Mills has a population of just over 11,000. Almonte town's population is 4611, an increase of just over 5% over the past five years while Pakenham (2007) and Ramsay (4451) have grown by 13% and 23% respectively. Proximity to Canada's Silicon Valley North and Ottawa has markedly increased Mississippi Mills popularity as a place to live. And, located near the junction of Highway 15 and county road 29, it is easily accessible from the National Capital region and from the St. Lawrence Valley and highway #401.

The average age of the population ranges from 34.3 to 38.7 with the Ramsay Township region marking the youngest average age and Almonte itself the older. On average, Mississippi compares to the provincial average of 35.8.

Educational levels in Mississippi Mills may reflect above average numbers of professionals. The township has a greater percentage of those with post secondary education than the province as a whole.

The professional nature of its work force may also be reflected in its average total income which is marginally higher than Ontario. The bulk of its labour force is employed in the service sector and its unemployment is significantly below provincial averages.
